NOTES
Distances are approximate and represent distances between checkpoints using the most logical route or paths / trails. Teams were free to choose any route between checkpoints, with the exception of some 'no go' areas. On the right is the pre-race approximate elevation profile. Two key route and CP changes had to be made between the planning stages and the race itself. (1) The logical mountain biking route between CP9 and planned CP 10 at the start of the kayaking stage became eroded and dangerous due to landslips (on the side of a canyon). An approx 20km longer but easier route was chosen and CP10 moved in order to facilitate this. The start of the kayaking stage became CP11. (2) The kayak stage was lengthened just a couple of days prior to the race since the canyon lake on which this stage was held is also home to one of Europe's highest hydroelectric dams. Local advice that the lake water levels would remain more or less constant during the last pre-race planning visit to the lake 10 days before became irrelevant when a power station across the border broke down and the Piva Dam was called upon to swing into action and provide electricity for our neighbours. A 17 metre drop in water levels (!!) meant the original kayak put out point had to be abandoned (as it became sheer cliffs!) and a new location sourced. This meant lengthening the kayak stage somewhat in order to find a suitable kayak put out location ... but hey .... this is adventure racing !!
